ORANGE PLASTIC faux African 'water drums'

I've been experimenting with plastic versions of African water drums and stumbled on the coolest
solution:

Take a large plastic bowl (in my case I just finished a long european solo tour that was dedicated
to Dayglo Orange Plastic) so I choose that color.........you know, the kind that you put butt loads of popcorn into.

Then go out and get three different sizes (or more) of plastic cups, including a couple of really deep ones

Fill the bowl close to the brim with water (but not too full)
and then hold the cup face down and submerse it a several inches under water so that it
retains air inside of it.

It will want to come back out of the water so you have to hold it down.

Now mallet the top of the cup and as you are doing it , let go of it for as long as you can (while striking it simultaneously)
without allowing it to leave the surface of the water.

It has an amazing deep and resonant sound (akin to a TR-808 resonannt subkick sound).

Each size of plastic glass will yield another pitch of this found sound scale.

Tomorrow, I"m going to experiment with poking small holes in the tops of the plastic glasses and
tyiing heavy weight to them so that they will just stay suspended in the water without having to
put your hand on them. YOu could create some rad sounds this way.

This one is so damned simple. try it, you'll be surprised how simple and really cool sounding it is.

Is anybody else completely loving the new album "the witch's garden", by Abandoned toys? I think its the best ambient album I have come across in years. If you don't own a copy, you should really look into finding a copy. I think they have some clips of it on their site at:

Found Sound show: HIDE GALLERY, Santa Cruz (my European tour show featuring Translucent Daylgo Orange Plastic)

I have just returned from headlining 15 live looping festivals and events
in 8 countries in Scandinavia, Germany and the British Isles during
a long 2 month tour.

On that tour, the TRANSPARENT DAYGLO ORANGE PLASTIC tour
I came up with an unusual found sound/live looping show that
utilizes a lot of Dayglo Orange Plastic under
black lights (and bells and tuning forks
and vibrators and trumpet and overtone flutes and extended vocal
techniques and beat boxing and and and......

I will be performing this show at the very final performance at
the HIDE GALLERY in Santa Cruz, tonight (FRIDAY, July 11th)
from 10-11 p.m.

The HIDE , in case you don't know, is in the 2nd block
of FRONT STREET just South of LAUREL STREET downtown.

FRONT STREET curves to the right as you approach the hill
and that's where I'll be performing along with an amazing
electronica/pop band from LA, WOVEN (11 p.m.-12 a.m.).

They are one of my very favorite musical groups and they rarely
play in Northern California.

There will also be painters and airbrushers and dancers all
performing and creating while I play so it should be
a wonderful send off to one of the most creative institutions
that this town has seen in a long time.

I hope you can make it.

Great to be back in Santa Cruz,

I hope to see you at the show tonight.

yours, Rick Walker

Sounds from nature using Google Maps

This is a cool little web-app, which allows you to listen to sounds of nature from various places around the world..

http://earth.wildsanctuary.com/

now, the gist of the app is to allow you to pre-listen to the sounds and then order mp3 versions of them.. but, I suppose some people might 'find' these sounds thru some other method of recording them while they play.. not that I am encouraging that.. :)

Call for musicians in San Francisco: Collage/Sample/Found

Bunnies, bunnies, bunnies, bunnies.

Ok, I had to get that out there.

I am part of a collective that has been producing a community based culture jam event in San Francisco on Easter Eve.

And yes, we're a theme party with the theme of bunnies. And we're one of those theme parties that takes our theme and shoves it so far down people's throats, they're pooping our theme out for weeks.

It's all about bunnies, easter, spring, and all the sugar coated cultural references that go along with it (this year, St. Patricks day is the same weekend as Easter, so we've added that as or sub-theme).

In keeping with our theme, we are seeking out new and original content. Performance and music based artists that explore culture jamming. If you think you might be the type of artist who creates content that would fit our vision, please email me (sfaarong26@yahoo.com) so we can talk further, or send me a message here on tribe.

(And while we do love normal dj dance music like house and trance, it's not really what we're going for. We'd much rather have people say "wft????" than "aw, that's some funky beats I can dance too". Although, if you can combine it into "wtf??? This music is so weird, but yet, I can not stop dancing!", then you score an A+)

I was playing Mandolin through some weird digital effects tonight in the living room when I realized that
our washing machine (in the other room) was kicking out a pretty consistent groove (randomly, of course)
in 6/8.

I took a short lo fi video with audio of it jamming.

I just love when machine noises sound sentient............this is one of the better examples
of this phenomenae that I've heard.

Check out the dancing bottle of TIDE while you are at it.

Caution: this is a hefty download (100 megs.) so only attempt this if you have a good DSL or Broadband
connection, otherwise it will take forever and your stolen music downloads will slow to a crawl .

"The sounds found project is a repository of audio recordings from the field. You are free to do with them whatever you desire. Authorship is void here. Too many declarations of property are made by people who simply pressed a record button, this project exists to encourage a different path."

Weird Zithers Tribe formed Come Join Us!

http://tribes.tribe.net/weirdzithers

I have been playing with a lot of zither experiments that are out of the norm lately.
I had a custom MAXAPHONE and a custom BOWED PSALTERY made for me
and I've been doing experiments with really cheap childrens' toy zithers: preparing
them, processing them, putting them into weird found tunings and different ethnic tunings:
using contact microphones on them and processing them and looping them in weird ways.

Today, in the Weird Kalimba tribe one the artists who is most inspiring to me, Robert Collier
posted pictures of a kalimba/zither that he invented and built and it suddenly occured to me that
there are at least two of us out in the world who find experiments with these simplest of string
instruments fascinating.

So I started googling 'Weird Zithers' 'Strange Zithers' 'Unusual Zithers'
'Experimental Zither's' and discovered there
is an amazing world of people who step out of the box in their music and their inventions.

And I started the WEIRD ZITHERS tribe.

I doubt there will be a lot of members or even a ton of traffic, but it would be cool to turn each other
onto cool things that are out in the world that we have never heard of.

Come join us.

yours, Rick Walker

geese eating sounds like tap dancing

hey all! Thought I'd share a sound I "found" this morning.

I was out walking my dog this morning, and caught our neighborhood geese all eating out of the water. The sound was astonishingly wonderful! Like the fastest tap dance imaginable. Alongside their random yet rhythmic honking it was a fantastic score and a wonderful way to start the day.

happy hearing!

Found Sound Concert at MAKER FAIRE this weekend (San Mateo Fairgrounds)

I'll be doing a concert of Found Sound and live looping this Sunday
afternoon at the fabulously creative Maker Faire at the San Mateo
Fairgrounds.

I perform at 3 p.m. and the wonderful acapella 'band in a box' looping artist,
Kid Beyond will play just after me at 4:30.

the Maker Faire is one of the most stimulating and creative faires I've ever played
(and I've been fortunate to play festivals all over the world).

It is a festival where people who invent things and make things get together
to show off the strange worlds that they create.

It's like Burning Man for Inventor Geeks!!! Please come........bring kids, it's
like a Science Faire gone wonderful haywire!

arduino / open source board

What is Arduino?

Arduino is an open-source physical computing platform based on a simple i/o board, and a development environment for writing Arduino software. The Arduino programming language is an implementation of Wiring, itself built on Processing.

http://tribes.tribe.net/arduino

Arduino can be used to develop interactive objects, taking inputs from a variety of switches or sensors, and controlling a variety of lights, motors, and other outputs. Arduino projects can be stand-alone, or they can be communicate with software running on your computer (e.g. Flash, Processing, MaxMSP.) The boards can be assembled by hand or purchased preassembled; the open-source IDE can be downloaded for free.

Arduino received an Honory Mention in the Digital Communities section of the 2006 Ars Electronica Prix.

Saturn's Weird Radio Signals

This is some of the weirdest shit I've ever heard!

http://abc.net.au/science/news/sound/20050729_saturn.mp3

from: http://abc.net.au/science/news/stories/s1425596.htm
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Singing Saturn electric
Larry O'Hanlon
Discovery News

Weird radio broadcasts from Saturn, caused by the interaction between the solar wind and the planet's magnetic field, have been captured by the electronic ears of the Cassini spacecraft.

The loudest and most bizarre sounds are coming from the ringed planet's aurora, or northern and southern lights.

Dr William Kurth, of the University of Iowa, and team, report on the sounds of Saturn in the current issue of Geophysical Research Letters.

"Strangely enough, they are very similar to what we hear at Jupiter and Earth," says Kurth.

The reason for the similarity is that all three planets, along with Neptune, Uranus, Mercury and even Jupiter's moon Ganymede, generate their own magnetic fields that interact with charged particles steaming out from the sun.

When those particles are channelled to the magnetic poles of planets, they can create strange lights and other electromagnetic radiation, including radio waves.

"What's happening is all of the electrons bundle up together and spontaneously emit the electrical field" that is detectable as radio waves, says team member, Dr Don Gurnett, a pioneer of planetary radio emissions, also of the University of Iowa.

It's a truly weird thing, he says, and researchers aren't yet precisely sure how planetary magnetic fields are made.

Radio waves don't get through Earth's atmosphere

Jupiter has been known to broadcast its own radio emission since the early days of radio astronomy, says Gurnett.

But that's because Jupiter broadcasts in a wide range of frequencies, he said. Saturn sings the planet electric in a narrower band that doesn't make it through Earth's atmosphere.

Earth's own auroral radio emissions weren't detected until the late 1970s, says Gurnett.

That's because our own ionosphere, at the top of our atmosphere, filters out that particular band of radio waves.

The first time scientists discovered Saturn's radio emissions was when the Voyager spacecrafts made the first tours of the sixth planet back in 1980 and 1981.

At that time they were only able to record limited frequencies, listening and stepping up bands every few minutes.

In contrast, Cassini's instruments can get eight radio "spectrums" per second, says Kurth.

That makes for a far better resolution of what the planet is singing.

Saturn, says Kurth, turns into a planet-sized radio station when the charged solar wind flows and sort of bows Saturn's magnetic field.

That creates an emitter with one billion watts of power, he says. That's about 100,000 times more powerful than a well-equipped human-made radio station on Earth.

Besides just being eerie, the sounds of Saturn likely contain clues to the inner workings of Saturn that create the magnetic field, says Kurth.

Saturn's radio emissions could provide some clues to alien worlds as well, he says.

Already, team member Dr Philippe Zarka of the Paris Observatory in Meudon, France, has begun looking for similar radio signals from "hot" Jupiter-like planets orbiting other stars, says Kurth.

If or when he succeeds, it could reveal an unprecedented amount of detailed information about the structure of planets not yet seen in visible wavelengths.

So I'm using an old version of Cool Edit. I was finally getting ready to buy their new version, but they got bought up by Adobe. Adobe got rid of the cheaper version of the software and now only sells the 'professional' version for several hundred dollars.

I need something good and cheap that can handle multi-tracking. Ideas?

found sound concert in Japan available for your listening pleasure

I just posted my entire live concert at the
OTOYA club in Kobe, Japan that I performed a couple of weeks ago.

In the concert I use a lot of found intruments: brass candy dishes with overtone manipulation, frisbee bass drums that sound like god,
small bottles that I play melodies on, et. al.

I had a wonderful concert ( just really felt in the zone which is a nice place to be when you are completely improvising a performance) and got a pretty damned nice recording of it as well (enough that I'm seriously thinking of releasing the whole thing along with my entire concert from the first Firenze Live Looping Festival as
a live CD.

Anyway, it's yours for free in mp3 form if anyone is interested.
He also found me about half a dozen new door stoppers in the last month and I replaced several of the original ones.

I debuted this instrument at my recent Luggage Store performance
(the new music venue in San Francisco run by Matt Davignon),
but the new door stops are more varied and musical so I will redebut it at the INDIEhausen festival tomorrow night at the Next D()()R gallery in Santa Cruz which, sadly, closes it's doors for good this next month.
It was the only space dedicated to experimental and new music in this town so now we will have to convince the ATTIC (where we have our live looping shows) to do new and unusual music.

Special thanks to all the selfless dedicated and unpaid people who made the whole Electron Salon/Woodstockhausen scene happen in the past four years here..........this organization will be missed.

for my door stop-a-phone that my father built for me
for one of my found sound concerts.

He just found 5 of them on a trip to L.A.

Would you all mind looking around to find some.

I'll buy brand new door stoppers for everyone I get and send it to you before you send it to me.

The older and quirkier, the better. All the new ones sound identical.

Sonic Outlaws DVD (featuring music from Negativland, John Oswald, EBN...)

Hi,

Thought this might be of interest to you.

N

Other Cinema DVD Releases Craig Baldwin's Sonic Outlaws

(San Francisco, CA) OCD proudly announces the DVD release of SONIC OUTLAWS from acclaimed director Craig Baldwin (Tribulation 99, Spectres Of The Spectrum). This award-winning documentary features music and appearances by EBN, John Oswald, Tape-beatles, and Negativland who will release their own DVD on OCD later this year.

Within days after the release of Negativland's clever parody of U2 and Casey Kasem, recording industry giant Island Records descended upon the band with a battery of lawyers intent on erasing the piece from the history of rock music.

Baldwin follows this and other intellectual property controversies across the contemporary arts scene. Playful and ironic, his cut-and-paste collage-essay surveys the prospects for an "electronic folk culture" in the midst of an increasingly commodified corporate media landscape.

"Gleefully Anarchic!" – Janet Maslin, New York Times

"Baldwin conceptualizes history as a lurid exploitation flick" – J. Hoberman, Village Voice

"Our sense of the shape of creativity and of originality must always be in question if we are to flourish. Sonic Outlaws does precisely that." – Chris Chang, Film Comment

Craig Baldwin
Sonic Outlaws:
89 minutes
Price: $24.95

Special Features

Phil Patiris' "The World of Survival"
Eric Salter's "Boosterism"
Jesse Lerner's essay "At Play in the Media Scrapheap"
Upcoming Releases from Other Cinema DVD

About Other Cinema DVD (http://www.othercinemaDVD.com)

The Other Cinema Digital project provides an alternative platform for the distribution of extraordinary film works. We celebrate peculiar visions and offbeat sensibilities, drawn from the contemporary underground as well as the archives. Be it auteur, exploitation, or industrial, OCD delivers a decidedly different audio-visual experience -- opening up spaces both marvelous and dangerous.

About Craig Baldwin

Underground filmmaker Craig Baldwin is well known both as a filmmaker and a curator. His films have screened all over the world, including The Roxie (San Francisco), Museum of Modern Art (New York), Rotterdam, and London Filmmakers Co-op. He received his Master of Arts from San Francisco State University.

Sneak tip -- Ion Magazine in Vancouver asked The ECC and Negativland to conduct an interview of each other...! We're just getting it together and it should start soon. If I get a rough draft of the transcript or something, I'll put it here.

Otherwise, anyone in the Bay Area, Portland, or Eugene, keep an eye on ECC's website for shows coming up!

ciao,

cool found sound recorder

I just bought the coolest device:
It is a XONIX wrist watch (purchased at Fry's for $139 with a $30 rebate)
that has a mic built in and a USB connector for connecting to a PC (don't think it supports Mac, unfortunately).
Anyway, it also has a miniature stereo headphone jack and has very good fidelity as both an MP3 and a WMV player with 258 megs of Ram...

.....unbelievable!!!!! It has a fair amount of noise and the mic is cheap of course, but I captured some really cool sounds the other day at a friends' house................a squeaking door that sounds like an alien banshee screaming from another planet and a wierd phenomenae where the pressure builds up between two panes of glass when the door is closed in a room when the heater is on. By jumping up and down on the floor, the pressure of the room is changed slightly and you can 'play' the sound.......just great........and I got it on my friggin' watch.

The world is just too cool, I'm sorry!!!!

a series of crank calls
(incoming, but i like the way u think)
prompted me to play around with
found sounds, found live on the fly

turning up and down the volume
on the tv and stereo -back
and forth... led me to a fun time with some kids
who still may not know what hit-em

called them back once and got an answering machine of
what sounds like grandma praying to jesus and
some of the kids (prolly the ones who dialed me)
singing a hymn.

best
crank
call
i ever
received!

some of the dialog that rolled up on them was

"so are you free for a date tonight?"
i could hear their breathing change.

am still laughing.
hope they are too.

cool found sound found!

I was in Bridgeport (beautiful little town on the
really sheer east side of the Sierra Nevada in Northern California) last week.

Hiway 395 crosses a big metal bridge that was only 100 yards from the place where my wife and I slept.

It was close enough that it could have been difficult to sleep
for the noise of the trucks and cars periodically crossing it but it , curiously , wasn't difficult to sleep.

The reason is that the metal of the bridge seemed to have one strong fundamental pitch.

Depending on what car crossed it, it made this resonating swooshing sound that had a definite pitch. It was a BEAUTIFUL found sound and I kick myself that I didn't take a good recording mic with me (I actually had a state of the art laptop computer music studio in my possession).

I won't let that happen again next time.

What other cool environmental found sounds have you guys stumbled upon? By environmental, I just mean sounds that you can't physically take with you away from a place.

This festival is run on virtually no budget. The fact that it has become so big and wonderful is a testiment to the live looping community all over the world. None of this would have been possible without the existence of Loopers Delight, founded and maintained by Kim Flint. He just told us that this incredibly informative and exciting website has over 900,000 page views per month now. Thanks Kim for all of your energy, time and financial contribution to this community.

See you all there, I hope!!!!

yours, Rick Walker (festival organizer)

ps Sadly, Concert headliner, Italy's Roberto Zorzi's has had to cancel his tour to the US because of the illness of his partner Paola. Our heart is with them both and we pray for her speedy recovery.

Greets, plundertypes!

Just thought I'd post a greet since I finally got on tribe. My non-geek friends even beat me on here? Shame, shame...

Just to add some content -- The ECC is back from Poland; was performing a soundtrack for modern dance, if you can believe it (hey, John Oswald did too, as I recall... probably still does). The performance was in a 1920's Communism-[is good]-era electric power plant... awesome. Oh, to the content -- I knew about this band before going there, but didn't know their name is a dirty word over there: SZEKI KURVA is a techno-industrial band tossing in equal parts sampling of Hungarian folk music (since they're Hungarian) and cartoon. Fun!

Upcoming ECC shows:
Columbus, OH -- early August?
San Francisco -- Sept. 11 @ 21 Grand (Oakland, actually)
Madrid, Spain -- October 1-3 @ ExperimetaClub Festival 2004
Columbus, OH -- Late October @ Wexner Center (live soundtrack to Nosferatu)

later instigators,

- TradeMark G.

This is something I made with ProTools. It's mostly from sounds I made with my mouth and then cut and pasted into ProTools and played with pitch shift and delay.
